Papers of interest include: letter, 26 Apr. 1863, written from Suffolk, Virginia, re the difficulties of separation from his wife; 24 Oct. 1863, discussing the bombardment of Charleston, S.C., Northern politics, and the Copperhead movement in the North [i.e. term for pacifists who opposed the war, resisted the draft, etc.]; 25 Apr. 1865, stating that Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston had not yet surrendered and claiming that retreating Confederates were "killing the poor darkies"; and 17 June 1865, reporting that his regiment expected to leave Hilton Head the following day.
